PORTLAND, ME (August 8, 2013) United Way of Greater Portland is holding its 3rd annual food drive to “Can Hunger” on Wednesday, September 11, the National Day of Service and Remembrance. Wayside Food Programs will distribute the healthy nonperishable food items to pantries throughout Cumberland County. Over the past two years, more than 5 tons of food have been collected and distributed through this community-wide effort.
Donations will be accepted between 7am and 2pm at the following locations:
- Freeport (95 Main Street, in front of the L.L.Bean boot)
- Portland (Canal Plaza)
- Westbrook (Bank of America, 849 Main Street)
Suzanne McCormick, President and CEO of United Way of Greater Portland, says: “These food drives have become a powerful statement of community support. We can’t think of a better way to serve and remember on 9/11 than by making sure that food pantry shelves are stocked, especially as kids are heading back to school. Almost a third of students in our public schools qualify for free or reduced-price lunches, which means that they are living in households where adequate income and food security are likely issues.”
