KENNEBUNK, MAINE, July 18, 2013 — Avesta Housing’s Park Street School in Kennebunk has been named a finalist in the 2013 Affordable Housing Finance Magazine Readers’ Choice Awards in the category of Rural Housing.
Park Street School was selected out of more than 140 nominations as one of 34 finalists in Affordable Housing Finance’s ninth annual Readers’ Choice Awards for the nation’s top developments of 2012 and 2013. Finalists were selected based on several key characteristics, including adding to the affordable housing stock, neighborhood revitalization, innovative financing and community support. The Rural Housing category recognizes projects in communities with a population of less than 25,000.
In its feature of Park Street School, Affordable Housing Finance highlights the historic details preserved in the renovation, like chalkboards, slate floors and glass-paneled classroom doors; the adjacent community garden; and the large community room that hosts the monthly Community Café lunches for all seniors in the Kennebunk area, organized by the Southern Maine Agency on Aging.

The winners will be announced on the website in September and honored at AHF Live: The 2013 Affordable Housing Developers’ Summit, Nov. 20-22, at the Fairmont Millennium Park in Chicago.
Opened in September 2012, Park Street School features 30 apartments for people ages 62 and older or disabled in the historic Park Street School building in downtown Kennebunk. Park Street School was also named a 2012 Notable Project by the Maine Real Estate & Development Association.
