The Portland Symphony Orchestra Welcomes New Members and Elects New President to the Board of Trustees

PORTLAND, Maine - The Portland Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce six new members of its Board of Trustees, each of whom will serve a three-year term. New to the board are Ken Blaschke, Tim Boulette, Carole Case, Elisabeth Chase, James D. Konkel and Kenneth Nelson. J. Samuel Parkhill is elected the new President of the Board.

J. Samuel Parkhill
President of the Board of Trustees

For the past 27 years, Parkhill has been associated with The Hall Corporation (formerly The Stackpole Corporation), a diversified manufacturing corporation, and as CEO since 1995. He is also a director of BTU International, Inc. and is Chairman of its Compensation Committee. Parkhill holds a B.A. from Williams College, a J.D. from Boston University and attended the Advanced Management and Corporate Finance Programs at the Harvard Business School. He has served on the Board of Trustees and as Vice Chairman of Opportunity Farm for Boys and Girls in New Gloucester; as Treasurer and a member of the Board of Governors of Dedham Country and Polo Club (Dedham MA); as a Director and Treasurer of Big Brother Association of Boston; and as a Trustee and member of the Executive Committee of his alma mater, Belmont Hill School. He is a resident of South Freeport.

Ken Blaschke
Board of Trustees

Blaschke is a portfolio manager at HeadInvest in Portland. He specializes in investment management for high net worth families and endowments. He has over twenty years of experience in investment management and was formerly in institutional equities at Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley. He holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley and did post graduate studies through Yale in Hong Kong. He is a resident of Yarmouth.

Timothy Boulette
Board of Trustees

A native of Maine, Boulette received an A.B. in Music from Brown University. He graduatedcum laude from the University of Maine School of Law. From 1999-2000, he served as a law clerk for the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, joining Murray Plumb & Murray in 2000 as an associate and becoming a partner in 2008.  He practices in the areas of real estate, banking, and securities. He has served on the Board of Trustees of Congregation Bet Ha’am in South Portland, including terms as Vice President (2007-2009), President (2009-2011), and Immediate Past President (2011-2013). He also has served on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine. He is a resident of South Portland.

Carole Case
Board of Trustees

Carole Case has been a volunteer for the Portland Symphony Orchestra since 1977, working at all levels of involvement. She has been a past President of the PSO Women’s Committee and a past President of the Friends of the Portland Symphony Orchestra. She has chaired numerous fundraisers and Designers’ Showhouses. A graduate of Michigan State University with a B.A. in Elementary Education, she also received an M.A in Education of the Gifted from Columbia University.  Active in community affairs for many years, she was a Junior League member, a founder of the Children’s Museum of Maine, a past member of the PORTopera Board, and served on the Board of Central Africa Vision, a micro-financing organization in Rwanda and Burundi. She is a resident of Cumberland Foreside.

Elisabeth Chase
Board of Trustees

Elisabeth Chase has a science and teaching degree from Wellesley College and 16 years teaching experience. In 2004, she founded the Little Music Maker business which offers baby and toddler music classes as well as lessons in beginning cello, guitar, ukulele, piano, recorder, and voice. While teaching public school, Chase served on the Negotiating Committee for teachers’ contracts. She was Recording Clerk for the founding board for The Friends School of Portland and also a member of The Choral Art Society Board of Directors. She has just completed a term as President of the Board of Directors of One Longfellow Square. She is a resident of Portland.

James D. Konkel
Board of Trustees

Konkel originally joined the PSO Board in 2003. He is also on the board of Ducks Unlimited, Inc. serving on the following committees: National Development, Event & Volunteer Management, National Shoot (Chair), and National Convention Planning as well being on the board of Ducks Unlimited Canada serving on the Revenue & Event Management Committee. A 1981 graduate of Gould Academy, Konkel graduated in 1985 from Weber State College in Ogden, Utah with a B.S. in History, and minors in photography and anthropology. He is a resident of Cape Elizabeth.

Kenneth M. Nelson
Board of Trustees

A native of Portland Maine, Ken Nelson is a graduate of Bowdoin College and the Boston University School of Law.  A member of both the Maine and Massachusetts bars while engaged in active practice, he was a partner of the Boston based law firm of Mintz Levin, practicing business and real estate development law. He also served as The Staff Judge Advocate of the Maine Army National Guard. He was a founding trustee and early President of The University of Southern Maine Foundation and served as Chairman of the University’s Board of Visitors. Nelson was a founding director of The First NH Bank of Maine and of Atlantic Bank (now part of TD Bank). He is also trustee of The Maine College of Art and the Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine. In 2004 The Jewish Community Alliance inducted Nelson into its Maine Business Hall of Fame. He is a resident of Falmouth.

Founded in 1923, the Portland Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is the largest performing arts organization in Maine and is widely regarded as one of the top symphony orchestras of its size in the country. Made up of more than 80 professional musicians, the PSO is renowned for its critically acclaimed performances and broad community engagement.
