Six Attorneys from Murray, Plumb & Murray Selected for 2014 Edition of The Best Lawyers in America
PORTLAND, Maine – The publication The Best Lawyers in America selected six attorneys from Murray, Plumb & Murray for inclusion in the 2014 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in a number of specialties.
Drew Anderson, John Bannon, Thomas Newman, Richard O’Meara, Peter Plumb, and Michael Traister were chosen through an exhaustive and rigorous confidential peer-review survey in which thousands of leading lawyers confidentially evaluated their professional peers. The current, 20th edition of The Best Lawyers in America (2014) is based on nearly five million votes cast by almost 50,000 leading attorneys on the legal abilities of other lawyers in their practice areas.
Drew Anderson was chosen for the seventh year in a row by his peers to be included in The Best Lawyers in America list in the specialty of Real Estate Law. Anderson serves as the managing director at Murray, Plumb & Murray, having joined the firm in 1990. Anderson concentrates his practice in commercial real estate and corporate law and handles a wide variety of real estate matters, including the purchase and sale of commercial and industrial buildings, and multi-family apartment buildings. He also heads Murray, Plumb & Murray’s title services group, which provides, as agent for Lawyers Title Insurance Company, First American Title Insurance Company and Old Republic National Title Insurance Company, title insurance products to real estate owners. He is a member of the Cumberland County, Maine State, New York State, and American Bar Associations. Anderson earned his B.A. from Boston College and his law degree from Suffolk University Law School. He is a resident of Portland.
John Bannon has been chosen by his peers for the seventh year in a row to be included in The Best Lawyers in America list in the specialty of Land Use and Zoning Litigation. Bannon joined Murray, Plumb & Murray as an associate in 1981 and became a director of the firm in 1987. Since 1981, Bannon has worked intensively with virtually every type of law governing land in Maine. He has assisted clients in obtaining development permits for projects ranging from small day care centers to multi-million dollar electricity generating plants. He also has devoted much of his practice to helping persons who are opposed to objectionable projects, or who wish to keep development within reasonable limits. He has successfully litigated numerous disputes concerning land title, boundaries, easements, and adverse possession. He received his undergraduate degree from Bowdoin and then graduated from the University of Maine School of Law. Bannon is a member of the Cumberland County, Maine State, and American Bar Associations. He is a resident of West Cumberland.
Thomas Newman has been selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America list every year since 2000. He was chosen for the honor this year in the specialties of: Arbitration; Bet-the-Company Litigation; Commercial Litigation; Copyright Law; Construction Litigation; Intellectual Property Litigation; Patent Litigation; Mass Tort Litigation/Class Actions – Plaintiffs; Patent Law; and Trademark Law. Additionally, Newman has been named the Best Lawyers’ 2014 Portland, ME Litigation – Construction “Lawyer of the Year.” Newman, who heads the firm’s litigation and trial practice group, has tried numerous substantial jury and non-jury cases to verdict in federal and state courts across the country. He also serves as general advisor and counselor to a number of business entities. Newman devotes countless hours to pro bono legal services helping Maine’s immigrants keep their families together, gain protection from persecution and domestic violence, attain residency and work authorization, and become proud U.S. citizens. Newman is a visiting teacher of Trial Advocacy at the Harvard Law School. He received his undergraduate degree summa cum laude from Hamilton College and graduated with honors from Cornell Law School where he was an editor of the Law Review. He is a resident of Portland.
Richard O’Meara was chosen for the seventh year in a row to be included in The Best Lawyers in America list. He has been selected for his work in the specialties of: Arbitration; Civil Rights Law; Commercial Litigation; Copyright Law; Education Law; Intellectual Property Litigation; Labor and Employment Litigation; and Patent Litigation. O’Meara has also been named the Best Lawyers’ 2014 Portland, ME Litigation – Labor & Employment “Lawyer of the Year.” O’Meara joined Murray, Plumb & Murray in 1987. He devotes a significant portion of his practice to representing individuals with disabilities and their families, usually on issues arising under federal and state special education or antidiscrimination laws. He has been instrumental in improving the educational system for children with disabilities in Maine and has devoted many years of service to the Disability Rights Center, serving on the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee and as President of the Board. He also served as volunteer Legal Director of the Maine Civil Liberties Union since 1989. O’Meara received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and his Masters degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Virginia School of Law. He is a resident of Cape Elizabeth.
This is the fourth year in a row that Peter Plumb, co-founder and senior director of Murray, Plumb & Murray, will appear in The Best Lawyers in America list. He has been selected by his peers for his work in Bankruptcy and Creditor-Debtor Rights/Insolvency and Reorganization Law; Commercial Litigation; Banking and Finance Litigation; Real Estate Litigation; and Mediation. Plumb has been named the Best Lawyers’ 2014 Portland, ME Litigation – Banking & Finance “Lawyer of the Year.” Plumb is a member of Maine State, Cumberland County, and American Bar Associations. He earned his A.B. at Princeton and graduated with honors from the Columbia University School of Law. His practice focuses on advice and counsel to small businesses, including business and family real estate succession planning and to creditors and debtors involved in financing, bankruptcy and related litigation. In recent years he has been building a mediation practice focused on his practice areas. He is a resident of Portland.
Michael Traister has been selected by his peers for the fifth year in a row to be included inThe Best Lawyers in America list. He has been chosen for his work in the specialties of Land Use & Zoning Law and Construction Litigation. Traister is a director at Murray, Plumb & Murray, having joined the firm in 1995. He maintains a wide-ranging civil litigation and trial practice, with particular focus on business, construction, property, landlord-tenant and probate matters. Traister also has extensive experience in the land use and zoning areas. Accordingly, he has handled numerous boundary, easement, zoning, and development disputes, as well as eminent domain litigation. Traister is a member of the Cumberland County, and American Bar Associations. He has served as Chair of the New Lawyers Section of the Maine Bar Association and is currently a member of the Town of North Yarmouth Zoning Board of Appeals. He received his undergraduate degree from Brandeis University. He graduated summa cum laude from University of Maine School of Law where he also served as associate editor of the Maine Law Review. He is a resident of North Yarmouth.
