Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion to perform at Grand Opening
WATERVILLE, Maine – Bull Moose will unveil the new addition to its Waterville store on August 10, 2013. The space has undergone extensive renovations, nearly quadrupling its size. The new, larger space adds an extra 6,200 square feet, providing room for the store to carry books, toys, and comics in addition to new and used DVDs, CDs, records and video games.
Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion will perform for free at the store at 3pm on Saturday, August 10 to celebrate the opening. The performance will be recorded for potential release on Record Store Day in April 2014.
The duo is touring in support of their newest album, Wassaic Way, which comes out on August 6. The album was produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, who helped the pair go beyond their established folk sound in their newest endeavor. Sarah Lee is the daughter of Arlo Guthrie and granddaughter of Woody Guthrie, and the family has a long history of working creatively with Wilco.
Irion described the album, saying, “This record is a departure from a folk duo. I think this is the best example we’ve been able to present that shows the many facets of what we can do. There’s loud guitars, there’s soundscapes, there’s a lushness to it, there’s a popness, an edge.”
Guthrie and Irion were married in 1999 and began performing as an acoustic duo in 2000. Wassaic Way will be the sixth album the duo has made together, including a children’s album, Go Waggaloo, which features the couple’s daughters, friends, and family members. They have also each recorded solo albums during their career together.
“It’s the first time we’ve ever taken our time with a record and really gotten it right,” Irion says. “When I listen to the album, there’s not much I would change, and that’s hard to say with other records we’ve made.”
Other artists whose performances at Bull Moose were released include Mumford & Sons, The Decemberists, Ani DiFranco, and Regina Spektor.
Details on other activities planned for the opening will be shared as they become available.
