AUGUSTA – September 11, 2013 – As part of an Open House on September 10th, one of the Literacy Volunteers of Greater Augusta (LVA) classrooms was dedicated in honor of the Gilroy Family, celebrating their generosity and commitment to improving literacy. Many friends, volunteers and supporters of LVA gathered to join in the celebration including Elizabeth MacTaggart who represented Senator Angus King. On behalf of the Senator, Ms. MacTaggart thanked LVA for the important work and service provided to the citizens of the greater Augusta area.
LVA recently accepted a generous gift bequeathed by the family of Wardner and Frederika Gilroy of Bridgton/Fryeburg, Maine. Wardner Gilroy, who passed away in December 2012 and his wife of 65 years, Frederika, who passed away earlier in 2012, were active members of their western Maine community and historically supported organizations and programs that help needy neighbors.
On behalf of the organization, LVA President Mark Flight acknowledged the generous gift to the assembly while officiated in the dedication of the “learning space” in honor of the Gilroy family. A plaque bearing the names the Gilroys will be hung in the new space.
LVA has used some of the gift to purchase needed instructional technology for the students enrolled in the adult literacy program. Several Apple iPads and assorted “apps” were purchased and will be used with LVA students to improve their literacy skills and to assist students with disabilities.
John Brandt, secretary of the LVA Board of Directors and an accessible technology consultant indicated, “Several of our students have print disabilities that affect their ability to learn to read. The assistive technology built into the iPads will be very helpful for these students and others who have struggled to learn to read.”
LVA is a non-profit organization formed in 1973 that exists to improve the reading, writing and related literacy skills of area adults who read below the sixth grade level. Our trained tutors offer one-to-one, learner centered instruction in basic literacy, and support for English speakers of other languages (ESOL). All of our services are free, private and confidential.
